MURDER detectives are still scouring a car for forensics after it was set on fire by two hitmen following a botched shooting in Springburn.

The blue Volvo 4x4 XC60 vehicle used in the hit on William Barclay, 26, was discovered in a remote country road between the A737 and B775 near to Kirklee Green Reservoir, Ayrshire on Saturday, March 10.

The discovery comes after Barclay was attacked as he left a car with family members in Dykemuir Street at around 4.30pm on Thursday in an area of North East Glasgow where Springburn meets Balornock.

As he was leaving the car with his family, two hitman appeared and chased him. One of the men shot at him with the bullet narrowly missing their intended target.

A chase continued down Dykemuir Street towards Red Road where the victim was repeatedly slashed with a bladed weapon.

The two hitmen quickly bolted from the scene in a blue 4x4 motor car, and that getaway vehicle travelled back up Dykemuir Street turning into Craigenbay Street.

Police now say the car was found burnt out, possibly in an effort to destroy any evidence.

Officers have confirmed that, despite the damage, there are forensic opportunities available.

The car has been uplifted and will undergo a detailed examination by specialist forensic officers.

Barclay underwent surgery following the attack and his condition was described as stable by medical staff at a Glasgow hospital.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Graham said: "Although we believe this attack was targeted, we still do not know the motive for the attempted murder. The victim remains in hospital and we continue to appeal for information.

"I am encouraged by the positive response we have had since our appeal and we are following up a number of lines of enquiry from information already passed on to us. However, I’m sure there are people out there with information about the incident and the suspects who have not contacted police and I would urge them to please get in touch. We cannot allow the use of firearms on our streets and it’s essential we trace those involved. Your information could prove to be the vital link in our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call CID officers based at London Road Police Station via 101, quoting incident number 2580 of Thursday 8 March 2018. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
