A POLICE probe has been launched after the grim discovery of a man's body near an Irvine caravan park.

Officers were called at around 4.30pm on Monday to the scene after the body of the man was found in marshy ground near to Redburn Caravan Park.

The Irvine Times reports that police were today still at the scene and investigations were being carried out on Ravenspark Golf Course with forensic teams trawling the area for clues.

Ravenspark Golf Course was closed until investigations were complete.

The man has not been identified yet and police say his death is "unexplained".

A spokeswoman said "At around 4.30pm on Monday, March 12 police responded to a report of the body of a man found within water in marshy ground near Redburn Caravan Park in Kilwinning Road Irvine.

"Emergency Services attended and the body was recovered. Formal identification has still to take place and a post mortem examination will be carried out in due course. The death is being treated as unexplained and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
