As Scotland is braced for more snowfall on Saturday when the “mini beast from the east” arrives, Police Scotland have issued advice for drivers.

The Met Office has warned of accumulations up to 10cm (4in) in parts, and says temperatures are likely to plunge to around freezing.

The Police are advising drivers keep an emergency kit in their cars for severe weather, which should include:

•An ice scraper and de-icer
•A shovel for snow
•A torch and spare batteries
•Warm clothes, boots and a blanket
•Some food and a warm drink in a flask
•A first aid kit
•Battery jump leads
•A map or device with offline maps for any unplanned diversions.

Travellers are also advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions ahead of making any journeys and if the weather is poor or the road surface is dangerous, to consider whether travel is essential.

Extra time should be allowed for journeys and drivers should ensure their mobile phone is fully charged incase of an emergency.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice cover much of the UK, and are in force for the whole of Saturday.

Sunday will be a similar story, with snow and ice expected across the UK.
