A housing development in the North of Glasgow has been destroyed by a fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene at Wallacewell Quadrant, near to Barmulloch Community Centre, around 7.25pm on Monday.

More than 30 firefighters tackled the blaze which took hold of the site.

Locals reported hearing 'loud bangs' before smoke began billowing from the development.

A number of streets surrounding the area were closed off as emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were sent to the scene at about 7.25pm.

The spokesman added: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.25pm on Monday, March 19 to reports of a fire at a building site in Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to Wallacewell Quadrant, Robroyston, where firefighters tackled a large fire.

“There were no casualties.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
