GLASGOW volunteers have racked up a milestone 25,000 hours of service for an animal charity.

Dogs Trust Glasgow helpers have racked up a total of more than 25,000 hours of service at the Rehoming Centre, since it first opened in 2006.

In that time the centre has welcomed a total of 50 volunteers who have helped staff by cleaning kennels, walking dogs, feeding them and assisting with successful rehomes.

The charity currently has a range of volunteering vacancies looking to be filled, which can be found on their website.

These include a volunteer home visitor, who supports the charity by performing checks on the living conditions of potential dog owners and a an events assistant, to help build awareness of Dogs Trust initiatives at local community and rehoming centre events.

Megan Cocks, volunteer coordinator at Dogs Trust Glasgow, said: “We are so grateful to all our volunteers for giving us so much of their time as they have made such a huge difference to the centre. When bringing on new volunteers all we ask is that they are passionate about dog welfare and give only as much time as they want to the cause.

“We’ve been able to expand the volunteer team recently to include extra staff like myself due to the generous players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Their on-going support means that we can ensure the dogs receive the very best care and in our centre and with our foster carers whilst they wait to meet their forever families.”

Megan’s role is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, which has raised more than £8.6 million to date for Dogs Trust.

Darren Black is one of Dogs Trust Glasgow’s volunteer champions who has racked up more than 4,000 hours of service at the local Rehoming Centre.

Over the last eight years he has been a pillar of support for the staff and canine residents of Dogs Trust.

He said: “I can’t believe how long it’s been since I started volunteering at the Rehoming Centre.

"It is such a rewarding experience that it doesn’t feel as though I’m giving up my time. Volunteering has been a great way for me to do something good for a cause but also keep fit and meet people.

“Because my role involves spending time with dogs at the centre, nothing beats that feeling when you see dogs that have been here for a while, go home with their special someone. It would be great to see my special canine friend Ollie find his own family soon as he will make a great addition to the right family.

“Some of my favourite experiences as a volunteer have been helping out at the annual Fun Day, which is always great; making quizzes for staff at social events and being introduced to new dogs that come into the centre. I’ve managed to pack a lot into the last 4,000 hours and I’m sure the next 4,000 will be just as great.”
