WE waged war on the city’s pothole plague and thanks to Evening Times readers, Glasgow’s roads are safer.

Thanks to you there has been a massive 156 per cent rise in the number of pothole reports.

In January the Evening Times launched our #spothole campaign - and pothole reports across the city soared.

Pothole reports soared during our challenge to Glasgow road users to shout out about the state of our roads.

You responded in droves - and now the numbers are in.

From January 11 when we announced #spothole until March 22, pothole reports are up 156 per cent on last year.

During the time of our campaign, there has been 12,031 pothole repairs carried out across Glasgow.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “We have made real progress with pothole repairs across the city.

"The figures speak for themselves - it’s a massive feat and we continue to maximise the number of pothole and patching squads we have carrying out repairs throughout the city.

"The Evening Times campaign has helped raise awareness and encourage the public to report potholes to the relevant authority.”

During the #spothole campaign a total of 4691 potholes were reported to Glasgow City Council.

In the same timeframe last year, just 1829 potholes were flagged up to roads bosses.

This compares to 2530 in 2016, which makes this years's reports an increase of 85 per cent on 2016.

The Evening Times offered a prize of new tyres worth up to £1000 for the reader who found the city's biggest pothole.

We have had scores of responses from people using copies of the Evening Times to demonstrate how big their pothole was.

Others used water bottles, rulers - and even a CD.

We have had reports of people being hit with massive bills after potholes burst tyres and wrecked alloys.

Council bosses let the Evening Times join a patching squad in the city's East End where we heard how workers can face abuse from passing motorists.

Our photographers were also out and about on city streets every week checking for the worst craters facing drivers and cyclists.

The cold weather snap and the Beast for the East also wrecked havoc with council staff working extra time to try repair the roads, sending out patching squads across the city.

We will reveal the winner of the #spothole campaign in Monday's paper - so make sure you pick up a copy to find out if it's you.
