THE Pavilion’s general manager Iain Gordon was delighted that firefighters kept their promise to protect the venue as they broke in and put in place measures to safeguard it.
He said: “When we left the premises the firefighters said, ‘don’t worry, we will take care of the Pavilion’ - and they have done what they said they were going to do.
“Like a lot of Glaswegians, firefighters have love for property like that.”
Saving one of the city’s oldest venues was a priority for firefighters tackling the Sauchiehall Street blaze.
Renfrew Lane separates the site of the fire on Sauchiehall Street and there were fears that the Pavilion Theatre could sustain significant damage.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue’s Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay said that there was “significant risk” that the fire could spread to the Pavilion.
Jonathan Pie: Back to the Studio was cancelled last night and Ed Byrne: Spoiler Alert is due to run tonight with A Vision of Elvis on Saturday.
The Pavilion staff, however, have no idea how long it will take for them to get access to the theatre.
One of Glasgow’s oldest theatres, the Pavilion Theatre of Varieties opened on February 29, 1904 as a music hall.
