Generous members of the Glasgow community have been praised by fire chiefs for their support during the Sauchiehall Street fire.

Group Manager Garry Mackay said locals had made an incredible effort to support the crews while they were dealing with this incident.

Speaking outside the scene, he added: "As we now move into the next phase, our focus is locating and extinguishing the fires.

"The incident is very much ongoing and we are working on a 24 hour to 24 hour basis.

"We will be looking at moving the cordon in once we establish that it is safe to do so.

"I would like to extend a thanks to the emergency crews and those involved today in the recovery phase as they are working hard."

The Salvation Army also done their bit in looking after hero firefighters and other emergency service staff at the site of the fire.

A hot food van was stationed near the cordon offering, drinks and hot rolls to the firefighters who have been battling the blaze since Thursday morning.

The charity has offered a similar service at other major fires including a blaze at Cameron House hotel last December which killed two people and injured three.

They were also present at the Govan car scrapyard fire last year.
