THIS wee yin was inspired by the Big Yin to raise cash for charity.

Abby McConnell was bowled over by her class project on Billy Connolly and decided to raise funds for Parkinson's UK.

The seven-year-old will be taking part in the charity's biggest event of the year in the West of Scotland - the Walk for Parkinson’s at Glasgow’s Pollok Country Park.

And Billy's biggest fan is calling for as many people as possible to come and walk the April 15 event with her.

Abby’s mum Karen said: “As a family we have no connection with the condition among family and friends so when Abby started telling us all about Parkinson’s and the charity she made it clear she wanted to do something.

"When we found out about the walk at Pollok Park from the charity’s website we knew that it would be ideal and Abby set herself the fundraising target of £50.

"Amazingly she’s already raised more than ten times that - more than £500. She’s amazing and done it all herself - we’re so proud of her.”

Discussing the project with her teacher Fiona Reid, Abby and her P2/3 classmates learned about the life and career of Billy Connolly including details of his Parkinson’s diagnosis.

She was so inspired by the Big Yin’s story that Abby went home and announced her determination to do something to help.

Karen added: “You can’t move in our house now without bumping into Billy - drawings, masks, paintings, you name it - are everywhere.

"Abby has even made clay models of the famous banana boots.

"And if you shut your eyes you still can’t escape - Abby has taken to singing the Welly Boot song day and night.

"She’s even taught her wee brother - who’s three - the words and he joins in too.”

Abby is a pupil at Mount Florida Primary School.

Head teacher Carole Neil said: “We are all so proud of this seven year old pupil.

"Abby knows that the money will help support people living with Parkinson`s and one day a cure may even be found.

"By doing this she is showing she cares about others, a wonderful quality to have.

"One of our school values here in Mount Florida Primary is kindness and Abby is certainly demonstrating this value.

"Abby has received my Pupil of the Week trophy and she absolutely deserves it.

"I wish her every success on her walk and hope she 'disnae need her wellies' on her big day. Go Abby.”

Fiona Reid, Abby’s class teacher, added: “The children had a great conversation about Billy’s health and what he deals with day to day.

"They had such thoughtful discussions and said some inspiring things about his determination to keep doing what he loves, making us laugh.

"We are so proud of Abby.

"We will back up her amazing motivation later this year when we help to raise more funds for Parkinson’s UK during our financial fortnight.”
