A MAN died and 10 people - including eight children - were taken to hospital when violence erupted in Castlemilk.

Police said last night that a man's body was found in a flat in Raithburn Road after they were called out to a disturbance in the early hours of Tuesday.

The community has been rocked by the violence which broke out shortly after 4.30am.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested.

Two women were treated in the Queen Elizabeth University hospital and released.

The eight children were admitted as a precaution and released.

A number of addresses and back gardens within the street were cordoned off by officers as they combed the area for clues.

Forensic officers were seen leaving the building in protective suits while another detective removed bedding from the property as evidence.

Residents reported being woken up by the commotion in the early hours.

One local, who did not want to be named, said a number of police vans descended on the quiet street before blocking it off to the public.

She added: “I was taking the dogs out into the garden when I noticed that all the tape had been put up.

“The cordon tape was all across my front garden and into the back lanes as well.”

The incident comes as murder detectives continue to investigate a hit-and-run which injured five children on Stravannan Road in the area on March 24.

Roisin Walker, 14, was forced to undergo emergency surgery after her neck was broken in the attempted murder.

The driver who is being hunted by police, smashed into the group as they crossed the road close to the local shops.

He then reversed over Roisin before making off and leaving a burnt out car about a mile away in Carmunnock.

Two other girls, two boys and the man were treated for minor injuries.

Investigations later revealed that the intended target was a 21-year-old man who was also crossing the road.

The incidents are not thought to be linked but are causing concern for local residents and community leaders.

One councillor said he was “deeply troubled” by the recent events in Castlemilk and the wider ward.

Councillor Euan Blockley, added: “As these different events are not believed to have been connected it is difficult to have a one size fits all approach.

“I believe that a greater police presence is needed to reassure residents in Castlemilk that the police understand the severity of the situation.”

Councillor Malcolm Cunning said it “defies imagination what was going on that involved children at 4.30am.”

He said: “The main thing that there is no connection between the incident on Stravannan Road and the incident on Raithburn Road but it is concerning nonetheless.

“The local community needs some assurances from police that they are working to make the area safe.

“There were various other agencies involved, including housing associations, following the shooting last year who worked with residents.

“Castlemilk is a great place within a great community.

“The incident seems to have taken place behind closed doors and in that case, there is not much that the police could have done to stop it.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Emergency services attended an address on Raithburn Road and a number of people, two women and eight children, have been taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Enquiries are at a very early stage. Police remain in the area continuing enquiries.”
