KENNY Miller has put himself in line to start against Celtic next Sunday as he makes what is likely to be his final attempt to win another medal with Rangers.

The 38-year-old striker scored in his side’s 4-0 win over Dundee at Ibrox yesterday and his manager, Graeme Murty, dropped a heavy hint that the player with more experience of Old Firm games than any other will get one more chance to score in a Glasgow derby.

Miller was making his first start since tearing his hamstring against Hibernian just before Christmas and his goal was his first since scoring twice against Hearts in October.

Next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden will most likely decide if Murty is given the Rangers job full time and he is willing to risk starting his oldest player, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

“Kenny Miller brings an understanding of himself and the level that he needs to be at to perform regardless of any outside influences,” Murty said. “So, when things aren’t clicking particularly, and people are getting frustrated, then he still maintains his standards at a high level and that helps the younger members of the team.

“He’s put himself right in the frame [to face Celtic] because he added to the team, scored a goal obviously and he knows what it takes to play for this football club.”

“It’s important for [Alfredo Morelos] that Kenny is there but I was happy with other elements of his game as well. I think he needed a goal for himself but also the players worked really hard to get him that goal, so I’m pleased about that.”

Murty could be handed the job on a permanent basis if Rangers beat Celtic for the first time in two years, but yesterday’s performance against Dundee will have to be greatly improved upon seven days from now.

“We’re moving in the right direction towards where we want to be,” Murty said. “That progress slowed in the last couple of weeks, it didn’t stop. We are in a position to re-accelerate towards the end of the season.”
