THE next stage of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry will focus on a children’s home which operated in Cardonald.

Evidence will now be given on establishments run by the Sisters of Nazareth when the inquiry continues on April 24 in Edinburgh.

The Sisters of Nazareth, which is the Roman Catholic order of nuns, operated children’s homes in Aberdeen, Cardonald, Kilmarnock and Lasswade.

The Cardonald home opened on Paisley Road West in 1906 to provide accommodation to orphans, mainly Roman Catholic girls. Today, the home provides residential care for the elderly.

Evidence will be heard from those who were residents in the Cardonald home as well as other witnesses.

Many of the individuals who are speaking at the inquiry will have their anonymity protected.

Evidence given at hearings will supplement written statements taken from witnesses in advance and documents which have been recovered by the inquiry team during the course of investigations.

The hearings are expected to continue throughout May and June.

The inquiry is undertaking investigations into a large number of institutions. All evidence gathered will be carefully considered and decisions will then be made on what evidence is to be presented at a hearing. Further parts of the second phase of hearings will be announced in due course.

The inquiry will also continue to take statements from survivors in private sessions and from a range of other witnesses.

Anyone with information or experiences is urged to contact the witness support team as soon as possible.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings. There is no reserved seating in the public area and it is not necessary to notify the inquiry of attendance in advance.

The hearings venue will open to the public at 9.30am each day of hearings, ahead of a 10am start.

Further information about public access can be found on the inquiry’s website.

Hearings will take place in Edinburgh at the inquiry’s hearing venue, situated on the 3rd floor of Rosebery House, 9 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 5EZ.
