The Minor Injuries Unit in the west of Glasgow will close again after a temporary opening over the winter.

The unit at Yorkhill will move to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital across the River Clyde.

The health board was criticised for announcing the closure the day before it was due to take effect.

Sandra White, Kelvin SNP MSP, said she received a press release announcing the closure which she said “came as a surprise”.

She asked the First Minister to get in touch with the health board to find out where the West Glasgow MIU will be located.

On the closure, Ms White said: “It will be a surprise to my constituents who took part in a consultation and were absolutely sure that the minor injury unit would not go to the former Southern general hospital.

The First Minister said the government expects a MIU to be in the west of the city.

Ms Sturgeon said: On the substantive issue of service provision, which is an important one in the city of Glasgow, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde reopened the west Glasgow minor injury unit at Yorkhill from early January as part of its plan to manage winter pressures.

“The timeframe was extended to cover the Easter holiday period.

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport has made it clear that she expects Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board to ensure that the west of the city has appropriate unscheduled care provision, and I know that the board will soon consider proposals for plans to provide such local services.”

The health board issued a statement that the West Glasgow MIU will close on Friday April 20 at 9am and return to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

It stated: “Opening the MIU from January to April enabled the Board to provide additional capacity over the peak winter months as well as the Easter holiday weekend where GP surgeries were closed.”

It said: “The West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital at Yorkhill will continue to provide a range of local hospital outpatient services.”
