HUNDREDS of people have said they are attending the launch party of Lidl in upmarket Giffnock after locals kicked up hell over the town’s reputation.

With George Bowie’s GBX Anthems on standby, the hilarious event comes after residents slammed the decision to open a Lidl on the site of the former Whole Foods Market after it closed suddenly last year.

In a Facebook event, the organiser said: “Feral broods, benefit cheats & single mothers! Welcome to the prestigious, middle class area of Giffnock.

“To celebrate the launch in the abandoned shell of organic, daylight robbery merchants Wholefoods, Lidl hero George Bowie will be belting out the GBX Anthems across the in-house PA.”

“Giveaways” include:

  • hunners of them wee pizza bread things
  • half price ‘mad isle’ goodies (chainsaws, big shoes excluded)
  • wee bottles of blonde bier

“Lollipop is doing a masterclass in Lidl bag packing for ‘beginners’ a real how-to guide on racing the cashier, not actually packing and the unwritten rules of ‘going to the big shelf’.

“Let’s show Giffnock how we do this”

A final note at the end adds: “Please refrain from stealing the locals’ purses.”

So far, almost 400 people have said they are “going” on May 5 with around 800 “interested.”

As reported by the Evening Times on Thursday, one local said the German store would “bring down the tone of the whole area” and described it as a “sad day.”

The Evening Times reader wrote on the post announcing the change: “This is disgraceful news. The opening of this store will bring down the tone of the whole area.

“I’m disappointed that M&S have not followed up with their initial interest, perhaps locals should have lobbied them. A sad, sad day.”

Cate Simmons continued: “100% serious. Stores like this (cheap food, cheap alcohol) attract the degenerates of society.”

Another added: “Completely and utterly outrageous! There is no demand for a Lidl in Giffnock. It is only going to attract vermin that do not belong in this prestigious area.”

Gary Young wrote: “People from neighbouring Castlemilk will flock to it for the cheap basement bargains.”

Lidl plans to refurbish the site, installing an in-store bakery and creating up to 40 new jobs.

Whole Foods shut its doors for good in November last year despite a campaign from locals hoping to save it from the axe.
