A YOB who stole a car and drove while drunk was branded "disgraceful" and warned that one day he will end up killing someone.

Sheriff Lindsay Wood dismissed the explanation that Sean McDade, 22, had committed a string of offences due to his negative social circle and instead stated he was part of the problem.

Fiscal depute Marie McCue told Glasgow Sheriff Court that police on mobile patrol spotted the accused behind the wheel of a damaged vehicle at around 2.25am on March 21 this year.

As McDade moved off at excessive speed, the cops activated their blue lights. The accused then led the officers on a high-speed chase through built-up areas, reaching up to speeds of 60mph.

During the chase between Lethamhill Road and Easter Queenslie Road, McDade drove dangerously and failed to slow down at roundabouts. At one point he drove the wrong way round a roundabout and sped through a red light.

McDade was brought to a stop by gates at Easter Queenslie Recycling Centre. He attemped to escape, but damaged the motor's wheel as he drove over the kerb and verge. He then lost control of the car and crashed into the police vehicle, causing damage to its rear door and back panel. The officers suffered soreness and stiffness to their backs.

At the police station McDade failed the breath test, registering 62 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 22mg. Following checks it was discovered that he was not the registered keeper of the vehicle and he did not hold a valid driving licence.

Officers notified the owner of the stolen motor. The woman told police that she parked up at around 6.20pm the previous night and left her car keys in the living room. It was discovered that there had been no forced entry, but the rear patio door was insecure.

About McDade, Sheriff Wood noted: "There isn't much he hasn't done."

In defence, McDade's behaviour was described as "outrageous". His lawyer apologised on his behalf, claiming the accused had trouble finding work after serving a prison sentence.

The defence agent told the court that his client, who has issues with drugs, quickly found himself back in a "negative peer association".

Sheriff Wood replied: "He's part of that.

"He's lucky he didn't kill someone."

Sheriff Wood chastised McDade: "Disgraceful driving, but that's the sort of man you are."

Sheriff Wood sentenced the accused to 306 days in jail – of which 122 days were the unspent portion of a suspended sentence. McDade, of Bellrock View, was also disqualified from driving for three years and will have to resit an extended test to get his licence back.
