A HEARTBROKEN dad who made a promise to his dead son who drowned that he would call for a review of safety at the banks of the River Clyde has launched a petition.

Duncan Spiers and his wife Margaret set up the petition with a view of presenting it to the Scottish Government once they have attracted enough signatures.

They have decided to raise further awareness of the dangers around the banks of the River Clyde so that their son Christopher’s death is not vain.

We exclusively revealed in February that Christopher was just 28 when he slipped at the banks of the River Clyde and drowned.

He had been on a night out at The Savoy in the city centre with two friends, and was making his way home alone to his partner David’s home in Kinning Park when the tragedy happened before midnight on January 29, 2016.

City cops made attempts to save him but drifted out into the water, and his body was recovered by George Parsonage, of the Glasgow Humane Society, two days later.

Duncan, 52, from the city’s Balornock, said: “We want to get enough signatures then we will go to the Scottish Government to see what the next steps are.

“A lot of people did not know what happened to Christopher. People read the story in the Evening Times and said although what happened was tragic, it is important to highlight the dangers at the River Clyde.”

He added: “We just want someone to take us seriously and at least have a look at the River Clyde to see if the banks are safe.

“It is not a lot we are asking for, we just want to save other lives. I promised Christopher when he died that we would do our best to make sure the banks of the River Clyde are safe.”

Over 200 hundred people have signed the petition so far with many sharing the sentiment as the Spiers’ family.

Margaret, 54, said: “Please sign our petition in memory of our son Christopher.

“We would like some simple safety measures put in at the Clyde side.

“If one life can be saved, we together would have accomplished so much.”

She has called for better safety measures around the banks of the River Clyde including better monitoring of CCTV and ropes put into safety belts.
