THREE internationally-touring musicians will unite to create a cross-cultural collaboration based on the music of their Lithuanian and Scottish roots through a contemporary lens using improvisation, electronics, and diverse instruments.

Together Abraham Brody (voice, violin, piano, electronics), Emma Smith (bass), and Sarah-Jane Summers (viola) will bring their new collaboration, Roots/Crossings, to the CCA in Glasgow as well as the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

Brody is a Lithuanian-American composer, singer, and instrumentalist. Drawing inspiration from rituals, roots and folklore, he combines composition, improvisation and multimedia, pushing the boundaries between artist and audience, and challenging the traditional notions of a performer in the 21st century.

He told the Evening Times: “I am thrilled to be performing in Scotland for the first time. Sharing music and collaborating with musicians from other cultures is vital for me, and I am excited to work with some of Scotland’s finest musicians this time.”

Smith is a professional double bass player and producer. An advocate for gender balance in the arts, she curates the acclaimed Bitches Brew showcase of outstanding female improvising talent.

Since 2014 she has been involved with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's Connect programme on their SCO Vibe project, working with hard-to-reach teenagers in a massed band setting. She is involved with the Welcoming, an organisation which provides support for migrants and refugees across Edinburgh, and with Saheliya, a specialist mental health support organisation for BME women and girls in Scotland.

A tradition bearer of the old Highland style of Scottish fiddle playing, Summers was extremely fortunate to have been taught by the late, great Donald Riddell (1908-1992), who learnt his fiddling from a relative of hers, Alexander Grant of Battangorm (1856-1942).

This circle of the gift of tradition from her family back to her family has always been extremely important to Summers. Add to this a masters degree in Norwegian traditional music and free improvisation from the prestigious Norwegian State Academy of Music and the result is a versatile, free-thinking, impassioned performer.

Roots/Crossings will take place at the CCA on May 19.
