PLANS have been submitted for a permanent function room at a popular wedding venue after a row with Glasgow City Council's Licensing Board.

The Carnbooth House Hotel in Carmunnock have submitted plans for an extension to include a new function room and brasserie.

The hotel on Busby Road also want to make alterations to the back of their premises and add additional bedrooms. The plans also include new and altered parking spaces.

It comes after we reported that the popular wedding venue had started a petition to hit out at the local authority over their decision to refuse an occasional drinks licence in their marquee. They claimed it will put around 20 jobs at risk and result in the closure of their business.

In a planning statement, the hotel said: "Presently the majority of weddings are held in a temporary structure marquee to the rear of the house hotel.

"While this has its own attraction (as a ‘marquee’ style wedding) it is not ideal.

"The Glasgow Licensing Board has expressed the need for a permanent venue to be constructed as the result of the a small number of (unsubstantiated) complaints of noise nuisance.

"Consequently, the Licensing Board has declined to award a permanent license for use of the marquee and the hotel is required to apply for occasional licenses on a month-by-month basis. "This means that each month the hotel is at risk that the Licensing Board chooses to decline an licence and planned events have to be cancelled. Cancelling any event is damaging but cancelling a wedding at short notice would be disastrous for the reputation of the hotel and it is very likely that it would not survive the resulting loss of customer confidence.

"This situation is not sustainable. The uncertainty of monthly licenses and the potential curfew on these licences makes it essential that the hotel obtains consent for a permanent facility."

Carmunnock Community Council welcomed the plans. In a representation made to the city planners, the community council said: "The proposal to build a permanent function room is welcomed as it would end the noise nuisance from the marquee, which is not soundproofed.

"As a significant number of local residents have contacted Carmunnock Community Council and complained to the Licensing Board and Environmental Health about noise nuisance from amplified music and speech from functions held in the marquee we would expect any new events space to have soundproofing to protect noise sensitive residential properties.

"This would also allow the Carnbooth House Hotel to hold functions without fear of upsetting neighbours. The facilities proposed would also be an enhancement to local amenity."

A decision is expected on the plans next month.
