A HUT known as the Ned Shed in Drumchapel has been the  cause of “mayhem” for residents.

More than 40 youths regularly congregate at the site in Southdeen Play Area.

Stealing wheelie bins and setting them on fire, smashing windows, breaking bottles and terrorising residents are just some of the problems that have been raised.

They have reportedly been smashing bottles and leaving them upturned in the park’s grass – with the intent of harming dogs and children.

Residents of Southdeen Avenue have presented a petition to Glasgow City Council demanding the demolition of the hut.

A special meeting was held at Glasgow City Chambers to discuss the fate of the ‘Ned Shed’.

Drumchapel councillor Paul Carey said: “The youths have been causing mayhem — smashing, drinking, stealing wheelie bins and setting them on fire.

“It is that bad that constituents of mine have started their own petition to get something done about it.

“The park itself is well used by families but the youths are making it miserable for other people.

“It’s known locally as the ‘Ned Shed’ and is causing real problems for the area.”

G15 youth group has been granted one week to try and change the behaviour of the youngsters.

They appealed for a time amid calls for instant action.

Drumchapel Housing Co-Operative, the police, petitioning residents and Mr Carey want rid of the shed as soon as possible.

The council’s land services have been asked to cost the demolition of the troublesome metal structure.

Mr Carey added: “G15 do a fantastic job in Drumchapel with the youth, they are working with very challenging young people. They work their socks off, though.

“But the problem with these youths is that they come from everywhere, some even as far as Coatbridge.

“I want the shed demolished as a place for these youths to hang around as soon as possible.

“My worst fear is a resident loses it and ends up hitting one of them and ruins their own life.

“I’ve made my feelings clear and I told the meeting that it’s hard as a councillor to go against the word of the police.

“Come Friday, I will be recommending the removal of the shed.”

Southdeens Play Area includes a few courts for ball games, a skate park and a play area.

It cost the city council £300,000 and has become a popular location for everyone.

But the metal structure has become an enclosed space for youths to gather and drink alcohol in.

A council spokesman said: “Officers attended the meeting at which it was agreed the local G15 group will canvas the views of the local community on the use of the shelter before making a final decision.  Community Safety Glasgow are working with partners to address the issues of antisocial behaviour.”
