ONE of the businesses hit by the Sauchiehall Street fire has signalled interest in opening up elsewhere on the iconic shopping area.

Health food shop Holland and Barrett wants planning permission from Glasgow City Council to take over the former New Look premises on Sauchiehall Street.

They have asked for planning permission to make alterations to the retail unit within the listed building which is next to The Savoy Centre.

The move by the chain, who have over 1,300 stores in 16 countries, comes after the fire which started in Victoria's Nightclub wrecked their store.

Work has since began to demolish the block which included several retailers, a nightclub and a pub. That process is expected to take two months.

Holland and Barratt propose to strip out the retail unit's existing fixtures and install new ones. They also intend to reuse the shop front but redecorate it green.

The firm, founded in 1870, have also carried out a survey within the unit ahead of the planning application.

A decision on the plans is expected in June.

At its height, more than 120 firefighters were at the scene on Sauchiehall Street, tackling flames that started in the roof of the building which houses Victoria's nightclub. The fire happened on March 22.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service previously said it was one of the biggest incidents it has had to deal with.
