THE weather might be a bit disappointing but a Glasgow yoga studio is hoping to warm up a champion runner for medal glory in Spain.

Tom Owens has been pushing his body to the limit with daily 90 minute Bikram yoga sessions in 40 degree heat, which tennis star Andy Murray credited for helping propel him to Wimbledon glory.

He is hoping the sessions will help him acclimatise for the World Trail Championships which are taking part in sunny Penygolsa in Valencia, Spain next week.

Tom will be representing team GB in the 85km trail race which includes a 5000m climb on a famous pilgrim route from the town of Castellón to Sant Joan de Penyagolosa monastery. He is one of four Scottish-based athletes and is due to fly out to Spain on Monday 9.

Tom said: “It’s going to be super hot - we are expecting mid to high twenties degrees.

"It’s really challenging for UK based runners coming from colder climes. I’ve found my body can go into shock when thrown into high temperatures and cramp up due to the unaccustomed heat.

“Classes are seriously tough, but excellent to help with acclimatisation.

"The studio is really hot and humid with a FAR infrared heating system, which has a range of healing properties including boosting circulation and healing injuries. It’s great for recovery too."

The runner scooped the UK’s most prestigious hill race, the Three Peaks Race, last week, which climbs over the three highest hills to prepare him for the World Champs.

Lou Prendergast, BodyMind Studio owner, said: “All the yogis at the studio are excited to be supporting Tom.

"We know how much Bikram helped Andy Murray and now the discipline is getting Tom in shape. We are so proud of him for being selected to represent our country in this fantastic race.”
