BARS across Glasgow are gearing up to celebrate the third annual World Buckfast Day.

Celebrated the second Saturday of every May across the globe, World Buckfast Day was established in 2015.

The team at the drink’s fan club Wreck the Hoose Juice came up with the idea of creating a day to honour the popular wine.

“We were simply fans who wanted to spread the word to all other Buckateers across the globe, drink Bucky and enjoy yourself,” organisers said.

Venues in the city taking part with their own parties include Driftwood, Bloc, Bread + Butter, Nice N Sleazy, Westend Lebowskis and Katie’s Bar.

As reported by the Evening Times last July, Wreck the Hoose Juice announced it had launched an app allowing drinkers to locate their nearest supplier.

The first-ever app of its kind, Find Me Bucky aimed to help drinkers find the wine, not just around the UK and Ireland, but across the world.

Available for both Android and Apple phones, the app’s creators said they had close to 1,000 locations, “ranging from Belfast to the Bahamas, Ayia Napa to Ayr, London to Lanark, and from Scarborough to Sydney.”

The wine has come under fire from politicians many times in recent years.

Former Scottish health secretary and Airdrie MSP Alex Neil said the tonic wine has had a damaging impact on his constituency as he urged the BBC not to film an episode of Antiques Roadshow at Buckfast Abbey over “promotion” fears.

He said: “My concern is that this programme could be used, even inadvertently, to advertise Buckfast.

“Viewers might get the impression that the BBC is endorsing Buckfast as a product.

“Clearly this would not be good given the concerns about the effect of Buckfast on the people who drink it

“The important thing is that they make it clear they are not promoting or endorsing Buckfast.”
