GLASGOW and its surrounding areas are set to be hotter than the popular Spanish holiday resort of Majorca this Bank Holiday Monday.

According to the Met Office forecast, the mercury could hit a high of 22C - with the thermometer reaching just 20C on the Mediterranean island.

After “a rather cloudy start to the day,” the weather service said: “The cloud will thin in the afternoon with some good sunny spells developing. It will feel pleasantly warm in the sunshine with a maximum temperature of 22C forecast.”

BBC Weather added: “This morning will start predominantly cloudy with the risk of a little rain at first. Into this afternoon, though, the cloud will break giving increasing amounts of sunshine and gentle south-easterly winds.”

Tonight will also be dry with lengthy clear periods.

Elsewhere in the country, Britons are sure to sizzle on what is likely to be the hottest Bank Holiday Monday since records began.

Temperatures could soar to 28C in parts of England as people round off their three-day weekend, making it the hottest Bank Holiday Monday in 40 years.

The May Bank Holiday was introduced in 1978 and the temperature has never topped the 28C mark.

Bank Holiday Monday in 1999 was 23.6C, while the hottest bank holiday weekend ever was in 1995 when temperatures peaked on the Saturday at 28.6C.
