SNP MP Mhairi Black has claimed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn backed Scottish independence in a private conversation with her.

The Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP fumed at Mr Corbyn in a new interview, hitting out at the way he “totally sold his soul, especially in terms of Scotland.”

Speaking to HuffPost UK, 23-year-old Ms Black said: “I’m raging at Jeremy. He has sold out in terms of austerity. He has sold out in terms of Scottish independence - because I know he doesn’t believe the things he says about independence now.”

When pressed on how she knew Mr Corbyn supported independence, she reportedly said: “From talking to him.”

“I was excited by Jeremy Corbyn for the same reason as all the Labour membership were, but since he has got into that position of power, what’s he done?” she added.

Scottish Conservative constitution spokesman Adam Tomkins said: “This is yet more confirmation that Labour isn’t just soft on the independence issue, it doesn’t even care.

“From Jeremy Corbyn to Kezia Dugdale, it’s clear the party is willing to sell out the two million people who voted No in 2014.

“Labour leaders on both side of the border paid unconvincing lip service to the importance of the union, yet behind the scenes would vote Yes in a heartbeat.

“It’s further proof that only the Scottish Conservatives can be trusted to prioritise Scotland’s place in the UK.”

Mr Corbyn has previously argued independence would be “catastrophic” for Scotland.

But he caused controversy last year when he reportedly said holding a second referendum would be “absolutely fine”, placing him at odds with his party in Scotland.

Labour dismissed the latest claims as “complete nonsense” with no evidence.

Ms Black’s comments come just two days after thousands of independence supporters marched through the streets of Glasgow.
