TWO rounds to go. And in the case of at least half of the top-flight clubs, two fixtures that will define their season.

Celtic’s title triumph did not come as much of a surprise to the Scottish football community, but the green and white celebrations have not brought the curtain down on the 2017/18 campaign. Far from it.

By next Sunday, the final make-up of the table will be set in stone after a round of midweek fixtures and the climactic weekend of games take place.

So what is still at stake?

THE RACE FOR THE RUNNERS-UP SPOT AND EUROPE

Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian are currently vying to be crowned as the best of the rest behind Celtic and sit in that order as things stand.

However, something will have to give at Pittodrie tonight when the Dons face the Light Blues with a chance to extend their lead in second place to four points.

Hibs will require some slip-ups from the teams above them if they are to catapult themselves into second spot, but should Neil Lennon’s side triumph in Wednesday’s Edinburgh Derby they will be a big step closer to achieving the feat just a year on from their promotion.

Aberdeen currently have the lead, but a trip to Celtic Park on the final day does not make their job simple. However, beating Rangers this evening would be enough to secure them another runners-up berth if Hibs fall to defeat at Tynecastle a day later.Glasgow Times:

The jostling for places takes on extra significance due to the uncertainty over whether fourth spot will be enough to qualify for Europe.

If Celtic defend their Scottish Cup title in the final against Motherwell on 19 May, fourth place will become a Europa League spot. In those circumstances, the runners-up spot would also mean direct access to the second qualifying round rather than the first, where the third and fourth-placed Premiership teams would enter.

However, Motherwell will be looking to upset the odds at the national stadium and if they can pull off an upset European football will be theirs and one of the trio of teams chasing second place will miss out entirely.

WHO IS GOING DOWN AND WHO FACES PLAY-OFF DRAMA?

The tension of the relegation battle was palpable at Firhill last Friday when Partick Thistle and Ross County fought out a 1-1 draw that did little to ease either side’s trepidation.

As things stand, the Staggies are rooted to the foot of the table with 28 points, two less than the Jags in 11th.

The Highlanders therefore require a strong end to the season, starting with tonight’s Dingwall clash against Dundee and finishing in Perth against St Johnstone on Saturday.

Hopes of avoiding a play-off and securing complete safety look almost completely extinguished, as County would require Hamilton and Thistle to lose both of their remaining games while they pick up six points.

Partick’s bid to avoid the drop continues at home to Motherwell tonight and Alan Archibald’s side will be hoping they can enjoy the same success as Saints did last weekend with a 5-1 win at Fir Park.Glasgow Times:

A trip to Dundee ends the season for the Jags and Neil McCann’s side are all but assured of safety now having clocked up a six-point gap over the play-off spot with a superior goal difference to the Firhill outfit.

However, Hamilton Accies are not out of the woods yet and require points in their remaining games at home to St Johnstone and away to Motherwell if they are to avoid being dragged into the dogfight.

Victory over Saints at New Douglas Park would all but guarantee another season of top-flight football for Martin Canning’s men, who have a goal difference of -17 compared to Partick’s -30.
