The world should be “ashamed” at the killing of Palestinians in Gaza this week a Glasgow MSP has said.

Several Glasgow MSPs spoke out strongly in a debate on Palestine and the 70th Anniversary of Palestinians being displaced to make way for the state of Israel.

SNP, Labour and Green MSPs used the debate to condemn the actions of Israel this week which left dozens dead and thousands injured as troops fired on protesters and drones dropped tear gas on crowds.

Sandra White, SNP MSP for Kelvin, led the debate, condemned Israeli military action and called for a two state solution to the crisis.

She said: “The Gaza Strip, where some two million Palestinians live, has been under Israeli siege for more than a decade whereby Israel controls the air space, sea and borders; the Strip has also witnessed three Israeli assaults that have made the area close to uninhabitable.

She added: “We cannot continue to bury our heads in the sand. It is time for the UK to join with the other UN member states and recognise the state of Palestine. I believe that it is morally incumbent on the UK to take that step, given its involvement and its resulting culpability for the current situation.”

Anas Sarwar, Glasgow Labour MSP said the rest of the world should be ashamed at what is happening in Gaza.

He asked the MSPs to consider an imagined situation.

He said: “Imagine if Glasgow was surrounded by a wall with limited people allowed in, limited supplies allowed in and intermittent rockets being fired in. What would be the international reaction.

“That’s what is happening in Gaza every day. We have to speak out. It is the death of humanity. “Where is the international community. There is no such thing as the international community when we have horrific incidents like this. There is no peace. There is no process.

“Shame on all of us. On every single person that allows those to go on day after day.”

He said Palestinians had no access to food, to water or medicines that people here take for granted.

Mr Sarwar said: “This is a tragedy on our watch. We should all be ashamed of ourselves. Condemnation is no longer enough we need to act.”

SNP MSPs James Dornan and Ivan McKee and Labour MSP Pauline McNeill also condemned the killing of more than 50 Palestinians this week.

Mr Dornan said what happened in Palestine was “ethnic cleansing” and people were being “murdered” by the Israeli state.

Ms McNeil said there was no equality when Palestinians are denied citizenship.

Maurice Golden Conservative MSP said that both sides of the conflict had to be remembered,

He said: “Israelis and Palestinians are two peoples linked by the same tragic events.”

HE said the motion focusing on the suffering of the Palestinian people was only “half the story”

Mr Golden added: “We must also champion the right of Israel to exist and be free from attack.”

He said: “It is important we remember the suffering and loss on both sides.”
