Expats and locals were among those in Australia wishing luck to the newlyweds in their married life.

Around 150 people cheered and whooped at a party in Sydney’s aptly-named Royal Hotel in Paddington, while the revellers tucked into beef wellington, trout or lamb and the prosecco flowed.

Among them was Katherine Booth, 21, who is travelling in Australia on a gap year.

The Kent native said: “I don’t really need any excuse for a party and a drink, especially on a Saturday night, and I wasn’t going to miss this.

“They’re such a gorgeous couple. Just so gorgeous.

“It’s going to be ages until the next royal wedding and I love them.”

Harry and Meghan are due to travel the 10,000 miles to Sydney in October where the Invictus Games will see wounded veterans from 18 countries compete in 11 sports.

Australia’s prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised the couple an “absolutely rapturous welcome” to Australia’s largest city, and the nuptials also provoked a joyful reaction in the inner-city eastern suburb of Sydney.

“Wedding of the year. No, the decade. He’s such a lovely guy. A bit cheeky but so lovely,” said Ben Rolfe, 37, from Sydney.

“Stand By Me was just beautiful. She looked stunning.”

If the nuptials of former Suits star were not Hollywood enough already, the fairytale wedding was brought to the silver screen across Australia.

Cinema chain Event Cinemas said there has been “strong interest” from those wanting a night at the movies but did not want to miss the wedding of the year as it catered for “royal enthusiasts wanting to celebrate this historic event”.

Elsewhere, the Australian British Chambers of Commerce were holding a black tie dinner and a raffle with proceeds going to the Invictus Games Foundation, while millions of people could watch the ceremony from their own homes as Channel 7 and Nine ditched the Saturday night schedules for events in Windsor.
