A DRINK-DRIVER caught more than four times over the legal limit has been jailed.

Wojciech Kucko, 37, has also been banned from the roads for the next eight years for drunkenly getting behind the wheel to drive a friend home.

The accused was pulled over by police on mobile patrol after they became concerned about his driving.

When stopped, it was clear Kucko was under the influence of a substance. He was arrested after failing the roadside breath test and taken to a police station – where he gave the shocking reading.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Kucko pleaded guilty to driving along North Hanover Street without a valid licence and with 95 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 22mg – on October 23, 2016.

Defending, Miss Gibson admitted: "There's no escaping his record."

She explained that Kucko, of Holmbyre Road, had been disqualified from driving for five years in 2010. At the time of this new arrest, he was no longer banned but had not resit his test to get his full licence back.

Although he was a provisional licence holder and accompanied by a passenger who was authorised to supervise his driving, the accused was not displaying L plates and was over the drink-drive limit.

Miss Gibson stated: "He got himself in a lot of trouble with driving offences in the past.

"He's very disappointed with himself.

"It is a high reading, there's no escaping that."

The defence agent claimed that her client would lose his job as a joiner if he was sent to jail – which would affect his partner, their new baby, and his two children in Canada he still provides for.

Miss Gibson concluded that during the time of the offence, Kucko was not working and had been drinking heavily the night before and into the morning before he was caught driving his friend home.

She added: "He's a man who's now turned a corner."

Despite the mitigation, Sheriff Diana McConnell believed that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate punishment.

As well as six months in jail and the eight-year driving ban, Kucko must also resit his test to get his licence back.
