A “DESPERATE” Springburn woman is continuing her urgent appeal to raise £50,000 for life-changing MS treatment before another devastating relapse.

Carol Scarry began her fundraising journey one month ago but only £1,490 of the target has been raised so far.

The mum-of-two suffers from Progressive-Relapsing MS (RRMS) and with every relapse a little more of her independence is taken from her.

Having already lost the ability to walk and use of her right hand, Carol is terrified her speech or her ability to feed herself will be next to go - a sight she can’t bear her children to witness.

Glasgow Times:

The 39-year-old told the Evening Times: “I had an MRI done recently and it’s still showing active disease.

“It’s got worse, I’m still progressing and still relapsing as well and I lose a little bit of function each time.

“I don’t have the time to wait, I need to get to Mexico and have this treatment.”

She added: “The fundraising is slow and if it keeps going this slow I know I won’t be able to make the target. I’m looking for help. I’m desperate.”

As previously reported in the Evening Times, Carol needs a new chemotherapy treatment which aims to stop the damage the disease cause by wiping out and regrowing a patient’s immune system, known as Haematopoetic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).

The treatment is used worldwide but it is still being tested in the UK, and given how far on Carol’s condition is, she didn’t qualify for an NHS trial.

Glasgow Times:

Her only hope of stopping the disease in its tracks is to complete her fundraising target by August in order to make the trip in October.

“I want to get there as quickly as I can,” Carol said.

“But it’s things like stress that bring on a relapse and I’m stressed about not making the fundraising so it’s a vicious cycle.

“Last year I lost the use of both arms for a while and now it’s more a case of what’s not up with me than what is.”

Carol added: “People I know who’ve done the treatment tell me you go in with the point of view that you that you’re just there to stop the disease and if you make any improvements that’s a bonus so that’s how I’m seeing it.

Glasgow Times:

“If I never walk again, that’s fine, I just want it to stop. This is my last chance.”
