THE Work Room is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in style.

The Glasgow-based artist-led dance organisation has planned a birthday bash at The Art School next week to mark a decade of innovation.

Established in 2008 by a group of artists who fought for space and resource for dance in the city, The Work Room’s studio at Tramway was created as part of Scottish Ballet’s capital development. The Work Room works with choreographers from across Scotland to research and develop new creative projects.

Driven by the passion and commitment of its members, staff and board, The Work Room has been successful in enhancing the conditions in which the independent dance sector in Scotland makes work and in increasing its visibility across the UK and beyond.

Over the past 10 years, The Work Room has hosted over 250 artist-led residencies, involving more than 500 artistic collaborators with work being developed within its studio and then produced, presented and toured in Scotland, across the UK and internationally.

Anita Clark, director of The Work Room, said: "The pioneering vision of the group of artists who created The Work Room continues to inform how we work with an ethos that is artist-led, independent and committed to research and practice. Our strength is in over 130 individual members; a powerful community of connections, experience and skills representing a multitude of artistic practices and at different stages of their careers."

The celebratory evening will consist of performances, music, film, DJs and food, and has been programmed by The Work Room members Claricia Kruithof, Jer Reid, Skye Reynolds, Lucy Suggate and Aniela Piasecka.

The night will also see the launch of a new fundraising initiative, Beyond – to support and nurture artist-led dance projects beyond the dance studio. Beyond will enable The Work Room artists to experiment and collaborate on new projects connecting more people to dance. By signing up, people will be directly supporting dance artists in Scotland as all money raised will go straight to this new initiative.

Anita added: "We are marking 10 years in the best way we can imagine – bringing people together to experience performances from our members and to launch a new programme to encourage more people to support dance."

The celebration will take place at The Art School on Thursday, June 7, from 7.30pm. For tickets, go to theworkroom.org.uk for details.
