With the Champions League qualifiers looming there is always a desire from supporters to get new players in and over the line, but I have to say that I don’t think there is any need to panic just yet.

With the World Cup looming and players and managers off on holidays, it is always unlikely that there is any business done at this stage of this window. It is the last few weeks really before you can expect it all to start to gather some significant pace.

I still think that Celtic really need to get three or four players in before the window shuts in August – and ideally you would want one of them to be a marquee signing.

You want the guy who is going to get everyone excited and who gets people off their seats.

I have to be honest and say that I am not sure Odsonne Edouard is that guy because we haven’t seen too much of him, but what I will say is that if Brendan Rodgers is prepared to shell out the big bucks for him – and he’ll cost Celtic £10m – then you have to say that he has done more than enough to be trusted on that one.

I think we have seen glimpses of the potential the lad has. The exciting thing about him isn’t just the pace and the power and the technique but also his temperament. He seems able to keep his head when the pressure is on and as we all know that is the real sign of a top class player.

Rodgers has another couple of weeks to get that one over the line. Celtic have until June 16th to formalise the clause they have agreed with PSG on that one and I do think it is one that the support would appreciate.

But I still think that they need another three players after that. The goalkeeping situation is good. You’d expect Scott Bain to push Craig Gordon all the way now but defensively there is still a need for some cover.

If you are looking to compete in the group stages of the Champions League and also hold your own again domestically in all competitions then I think you need to bolster the squad to make sure that there are options all over the pitch.

There is no doubt that it takes it out of you of you are playing Champions League football during the week and then playing domestically at the weekend – a look around the results after a Champions league week underlines that.

But that is where everyone wants to be and you need to have the resources to go and cope with that.

I have said before that I think the priority for Celtic fans is that the club really focus now on ten-in-a-row. They will not want to give Rangers any sniff of a chance of catching them and when you are in a position of strength already it is a good place to keep building.

The club are doing the right thing off the park by adding to the impressive infrastructure of the stadium but I am sure that Brendan won’t be too shy in reminding everyone that he needs a bit of investment on it too.

I don’t think there is anyone who would have just cause to argue with him and the money he has brought into the club since his arrival. He has secured two rounds of Champions League football and I am sure that, realistically of course, he will want the chance to spend some of that.

And he has more than earned that right.

There is never going to be the vast sums that are on offer south of the border but you can still shop wisely – and I think he can be trusted to do that.

Moussa Dembele could net Celtic a small fortune this summer if he decides to move and I am sure that there will be offers in for him. Edouard could fit the same mould and it is about staying within the business plan while also looking to improve the squad.

Brendan will have needed the break but you can be sure that by the time the World Cup gets underway there will be an eye open again. He will already be well underway with a list of targets that he will want to get into the club but these tournaments always offer you a bit of intrigue too if there are any bargains to be found.

In any case, I think you can bank on Celtic coming out of this transfer window in a stronger position than how they went into it. And that might send a shiver up the spine of the rest.
