DESPERATE workers tried to save their young colleague after he plunged from a ladder to his death in Bearsden.

The 20-year-old man let out a moan as he hit the concrete platform at Bearsden Train Station on impact at around 10am on Tuesday.

His colleagues then attempted to perform CPR while waiting on emergency services. But he died at the scene despite attempts to save him.

Glasgow Times:

Home Help worker Urmila Johnson, 48, from Westerton, said: “I was waiting on the other platform to pass the time because I was early for work. I was reading the newspaper facing away and then I heard a moan.

“I turned around and it looked like the young worker had fallen off the ladder.

“He was surrounded by other workers.”

She added: “It is sad, he looked like a very young man. I thought he had just fell and hurt his back - but he was getting resuscitation from his work pals. But I could see they were not getting a response at all.”

Transport minister Humza Yousaf paid tribute to the young worker on social media and offered assurances the incident will be investigated.

He said: “This is simply awful. My thoughts with the family and friends of the individual concerned, what tragic news.

“Clearly the incident will be thoroughly investigated, must ensure safety on our railways is paramount, be this for workers, commuters and passengers.”

Linbrooke Total Network Solutions confirmed that it was their employee who died. The worker was at the station on behalf on Network Rail.
