A SPRINGBURN man who was caught growing cannabis claimed it was to help him get to sleep.
John Cunningham, 30, was snared with seven mature and 13 baby plants – worth between £200-£400 each.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, he pleaded guilty to producing the drug at his home address on December 19, 2016.
In defence it was claimed that the accused suffered from insomnia and when the police arrived he was found breaking up sleeping capsules to take.
The cannabis was said to be for his personal use only.
His lawyer stated: “It was solely to help him get to sleep.”
Cunningham, of Eccles Street, was sentenced to a Community Payback Order with supervision for a year.
Sheriff Ian Fleming also handed the accused 135 hours of unpaid work, warning him: “It’s a direct alternative to custody. Make sure you do it.”
