Glasgow City Council has given permission for a block of 100 student flats to be built in Kelvinhaugh.

Developers have earmarked the site on the corner of Teviot Street and Gilbert Street as the location of the new building.

The building will comprise of 100 studio apartments and shared communal spaces as well as new landscaping when completed.

Planners have said the build will ‘complement the existing urban grain of the area’ which includes the neighbouring West George College, built in 1886.

The site was formerly the girls playground of Kelvinhaugh Primary School.

Once completed, it will be in close proximity to a number of student accommodation facilities including a recent consent for 607 student bedrooms at 145 Kelvinhaugh Street.

A diagram created by developer Ryder, illustrates that within a 15 minute journey from the University of Glasgow there is more than 2,000 existing student bedrooms.

It comes after local councillors slammed the influx in student accommodation in the area following the application for two further two city centre locations to be turned into student flats.

Developers have earmarked derelict land on the junction between Renfrew Street and Renfield Street as the location of two new buildings.

Elsewhere, the former City of Glasgow college could also be turned into more student flats, if developers are given the go-ahead.

The site on North Frederick Path and Cathedral Street is being looked for student accommodation.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, Councillor Angus Millar said: “It’s clear to me that the planning rules around student accommodation need to be considerably tightened up to address the problem of over-concentration, and I am pleased that the council is now actively looking at doing this.”
