TERRIFIED Maryhill residents thought a gun had gone off after a car crashed in a residential street.

The noise from the road traffic incident in Guthrie Street after 8pm on Wednesday sparked fear and alarm in the area prompting a large police response.

One resident said: "People thought a gun had been fired because of the noise from the road crash.

"The road is on a hill and there is several bumpers on the way the down.

"Everyone poured out onto the street in shock."

Dozens of cop cars and an ambulance rushed to the street which is just off Maryhill Road, and close to the area's police station.

The area was cordoned off as officers began their investigations and the Evening Times understands there was also a police presence in the nearby Wyndford area.

The force, however, confirmed today that a man has been arrested and charged with several road traffic offences and a breach of the peace following the incident.

The Evening Times understands  two young boys were in the car at the time of the incident. They, however, left the vehicle and it is understood  they had no injuries.

A force spokesman said: "At around 8.10pm on Wednesday, June 6, police were called to a report of a road traffic accident on Guthrie Street involving one car.

"Officers attended and following enquiries a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with a breach of the peace and several road traffic offences.

"He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday, June 8."
