A COMMUNITY in mourning will release balloons for popular Steven Campbell who died after he was struck by a vehicle.

Family and friends of the 27-year-old will gather at the Burnhill Pitches on Toryglen Road today at 6pm to pay tribute to him - a week after the murder.

It is alleged that Steven was deliberately hit by a white Ford Transit van in Burnhill Street last Saturday.

The dad-of-three, who is known as Stevie, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died. He was with two friends, a man and woman, who were not injured in the incident. They, however, were left extremely distressed by what happened.

Now green and white balloons will be released in the Celtic fan’s memory.

Friends and family Gemma Ramsay, Maggie McMillan and Louise Turner told friends on social media that they were asked to organise the tribute on behalf of Steven’s family, and urged those who knew him to attend.

Nicola said: “As everyone knew, Stevie was a massive Celtic fan and would be nice if everyone brought green or white balloons.”

The latest tribute comes after a fundraising drive was set up on Justgiving to raise funds for Steven’s young family.

Katie Curran hopes to raise £1,000 for the family he leaves behind. She said: "The scheme has lost another young boy who has three gorgeous kids and I thought it would be good if we all pulled together, and gave his wee kids a wee bit of money for a wee holiday or for whatever they want."

The Evening Times previously reported on the community leaving flowers, football tops, scarves and messages of mourning at the scene where he was hit which is in an area where Toryglen meets Rutherglen.

Robyn McGill, believed to be his girlfriend, left an emotional tribute, "You will never be forgotten. I love you so much.”

Daniel McCafferty appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday where he made no plea in relation to the death of Steven Campbell.

The 33-year-old from Rutherglen faces a further charge in connection with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

He has been committed for further examination, and will be remanded in custody.
