Opposition councillors are planning to force the council to reverse the controversial childcare fees increase.

The Greens have said they want to see the increase of more than 50% halted.

Parents who have to pay or who use more than the free hours entitlement will see fees raised from £2.54 per hour to £4 per hour this year and a further increase to £5 is planned for next year.

The council say it is to bring its nurseries into line with others as it prepares to deliver 1140 free hours for all three and four year-olds and vulnerable two year olds by 2020

Support from the Greens give opposition councillors enough of a majority to win a vote in the full council.

After meeting campaigners from Fight the Hike the Greens said they will bid to overturn the budget decision t the next full council meeting.Jon Molyneux, Co-covenor of the Green Councillor group, said:“We’ve listened to parents and carers and it’s clear that there is real anxiety over nursery fees and that many face being forced to give up their jobs, or get into debt, just to pay for childcare.

“We’re clear there needs to be some resolution on this issue before the Council goes into summer recess to stop the fee increases applying in August.”

The Greens said they opposed the 57% hike and wanted a rise to £3 an hour instead, but it was rejected.

The party backed the SNP group budget but said it is now clear changes need to be made.

Martha Wardrop, Green councillor, said: “We supported them on the basis of mitigation measures being put in place, but it’s now clear that those measures are not enough to stop the risk of some parents being forced into hardship.”

a spokeswoman for Fight the Hike, said. “We are delighted the Green councillors have listened to the serious concerns raised by Glasgow parents.

“With the support from Labour and Conservatives in Glasgow City Council a majority now support the position that these unreasonable hikes which will have hugely damaging repercussions for Glasgow families have to be stopped. We again ask the SNP administration to use common sense and listen to their constituents and other elected members to put an urgent stop to this policy and allow time for proper consultation and consider reasonable alternatives.”

The council said the increase is needed to deliver the increase in free childcare to 1140 hours a year by 2020.

Chris Cunningham, education and early years convener, said: "After a significant period of negotiation the Green Group voted for the amended annual budget, which included the increase necessary to create the greater equity in our early years system. This is absolutely essential  to deliver the capacity we need to provide 1140 free hours of early learning and childcare within the next two years.

"We are working towards additional measures including the provision of 900 free hours to 3 and 4 year olds and have increased the applicable income threshold to £30,000 from £25,000.  These measures were also backed by the Greens.

"We will discuss ongoing matters related to early years provision with the Green Group this week, as agreed. However to derail the plan to provide double the current provision by 2020, to roll back on that, puts at risk our agreed destination of high quality and flexible early learning and childcare provision and considerable annual savings for our hard-working families."
