A weather warning has been issued with winds of up to 70mph expected to batter Glasgow.

The Met Office said a "very windy spell" will develop before reaching its strongest throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England on Thursday morning.

Known as Storm Hector, westerly winds are likely to be between 50mph and 60mph but could reach up to 70mph in exposed locations before easing in the afternoon, the forecasters said.

The yellow weather warning states that the risk of travel disruption and damage to buildings is low.

Persistent, heavy rain is expected to begin later on this evening with the weather warning coming into force from 3am to 3pm tomorrow.

The Met Office said: "Persistent and heavy rain will extend eastwards across all parts this evening.

"Drier weather with a few showers developing later. Fresh southerly winds, perhaps gales along exposed coasts. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

"[Tomorrow] outbreaks of rain in the morning, persistent across northern Argyll. Becoming brighter with a few showers by afternoon. Windy with strong westerly winds, perhaps gales for a time. Maximum temperature 14 °C."
