DRUMCHAPEL police are cracking down on underage drinking – by targeting the adults who buy booze for youths.

The Glasgow North West division has launched “You’re Asking For It” to raise awareness of the consequences of buying alcohol for anyone under the age of 18.

Officers have been visiting retailers in the area to explain the campaign and asked for their support.

Sergeant Nigel McDonald, from the problem solving team, told our sister title the Clydebank Post that retailers have been given information on how to spot people making proxy purchases and will remain vigilant to stop under 18s getting alcohol.

As well as reducing crime, the campaign running from June 20 until mid-September, is to protect young people.

He said: “Retailers have agreed to display posters and information leaflets within their premises in the areas where alcohol is displayed and purchased. These highlight the consequences of buying alcohol for someone under the age of 18 which are a criminal record, a £5,000 fine, imprisonment or both.

“It is also important to stress the impact that proxy purchase has on the local community.

“Alcohol-related antisocial behaviour affects everyone. It can lead to an increase in violence and disorder in the local area.

“The misuse of alcohol can also have a significant impact on a young person’s health, and put them in a vulnerable and dangerous situation.

“During the campaign we will be increasing the frequency of our visits to licensed premises to ensure that we are supporting each other to make the campaign a success. We have also identified a number of problem areas linked to proxy purchase and will be increasing our presence in these areas.”
