A TERRIFIED Gorbals resident has told of rescuing her elderly disabled neighbour after a blaze broke out at a high rise block of flats.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a 14th floor flat at the tower block, on Ballater Street, this morning with smoke seen billowing out across the area from around 8.30am.

The category four call out involved up to 12 fire engines, police and a major incident van.

The fire was quickly tackled and by around 10am there was no smoke appearing from the flat on the second-to-top floor of the 15-storey block.

Stacey Holmes, 27, a commercial court resident said: “I never heard any fire alarms when the fire happened. I just heard screaming.

“I got up and looked outside and there was four fire engines and I thought something wasn't right.

"I went to the landing and it was full of water, it was coming through my door.

“I then found out there was a fire and we were asked to stay where we were and wait further instructions.”

The mother-of-one who lives on the 4th floor of the building, added: “I had to help my elderly neighbour who's disabled and we all got out.”

Another resident, Mohammed Ali, 63, who lives on the 7th floor, said: “The fire brigade came to my door at 8:30 and said come out because there's a fire next to your house, so I ran out."

Eliot Brown, 19, was evacuated from his flat on the 13th floor.

He said: "I woke up and opened my eyes and saw smoke rising past the window.

"I thought it was mist at first and then after that I heard a knock on the door and it was someone shouting to get out."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Area Manager Alan Fairbairn was the officer in charge of the incident.

He said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.58am on Thursday, June 14 to reports of a fire within the kitchen of a 14th floor flat in Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene at Commercial Court, where firefighters extinguished the flames.

“A total of eight casualties were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken praised firefighters for their work.

Ms Sturgeon, who is the local MSP, tweeted: "Latest update is that the Gorbals fire is fully under control - though firefighters remain on scene as precaution against any further risk.

"My thanks again to our firefighters."

Ms Aitken initially tweeted that five people had been rescued from the block before the fire service confirmed the increase.

The council leader added: "Thanks again to our firefighters for their swift and effective work."

The fire broke out a year after the Grenfell disaster in London.
