The fire has taken hold of the famous A-listed Mackintosh building and the flames can be seen across the city’s skyline.

The Mackintosh Building has been undergoing restoration work since the blaze in May 2014.

Areas around Sauchiehall Street have been evacuated including Campus nightclub.

Up to 20 fire engines have been spotted at the scene.

Police Scotland also said several roads were closed in the area.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Appliances are being mobilised from different areas at the moment."

Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said her thoughts are with crews currently working at the scene.

She said: "Devastating news about the ongoing incident at the Glasgow School of Art.

"Thoughts with all the emergency services as they work their way through this.

"Glasgow City Council teams on hand to assist residents and those affected.

"Please stay safe."

Outlander star Sam Heughan also shared his concerns over the blaze on social media.

Other social media users took to Twitter to share videos and images of the towering inferno which could be seen across the city’s skyline.

The fire comes months after a blaze in nearby Sauchiehall Street which destroyed Victoria’s Nightclub.
