MORE than 13,000 students are unable to find accommodation in Glasgow - due to a lack of available rooms.

Through three universities and two higher education colleges, the city boasts a full-time student population of 57,350, but not all are able to set up home.

Despite there being 11,080 direct-let bedspaces in the Glasgow city market and 4,807 university bedspaces, more are needed to sustain the number of students flocking to the area.

The majority of those who live in rented accommodation live in Glasgow’s G12 postcode, which covers the Hillhead, Kelvinside, Kelvindale and Dowanhill area, according to a report by CBRE.

A study of the area revealed that more than 10 existing student accommodation complexes are already operating with seven in the pipeline.

Glasgow City Council gave permission for a further build this week.

A 100-bedroom block will be created in Kelvinhaugh, on the corner of Teviot Street and Gilbert Street.

Once completed, it will be in close proximity to a number of student accommodation facilities including a recent consent for 607 student bedrooms at 145 Kelvinhaugh Street.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, local councillors have raised concerns about the over provision of private student developments.

Sandra White, Kelvin SNP MSP, said housing associations are priced out of the market as property developers snap up plots to build tower blocks for international students paying premium rents
