RODENTS were seen fleeing the scene of the Glasgow School of Art fire late on Friday night.

The news has now prompted Glasgow City Council to send in extra pest control workers to help tackle the issue.

Council leader Susan Aitken said it was likely they were displaced as drains filled with water during the firefighting operation late on Friday night.

Four appliances remained at the scene at midday on Monday following the blaze which broke out in the historic Mackintosh Building at 11.19pm and spread to nearby buildings, including the O2 ABC.

The fire is the second in four years to hit the building, which was undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration project to return it to its former glory.

Ms Aitken said of the rodents: “As it becomes clearer where they are being displaced to, we are putting additional pest control resources into the area to get on top of that situation.”

At the height of the fire, more than 120 firefighters were involved in fighting the blaze. There have been no reports of any casualties.

A few pockets of fire remained which crews were still working to extinguish on Monday.

Fire chiefs said they are confident they will discover how the blaze started - but stressed the "very complex" investigation would take time.
