GLASGOW’S first all-year round walking tour guide has been awarded a street trader’s licence.

Glasgow Gander, run by Jonathan Logue, is set to expand and begin charging for tours around the city.

Sharing the history, culture, architecture and quirks of the city are the focus of the new venture.

Councillors on the Licensing and Regulatory Committee praised the Anniesland man’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Mr Logue, 34, said: “I’ve been operating for three weeks and taken around 30 people around the city so far – I’m hoping to build on this.

“The market is definitely there – and I know Glasgow City Council is attempting to increase tourism to one million by 2023 – and we can play a small part of that.”

It is understood to be the first time a walking tour guide has come to the licensing committee for a street trader licence.

Beginning at George Square, it takes customers on a two-hour trip ending at Glasgow Cathedral.

The passionate tour guide says he wants to help do his part to boost tourism in the city.

He will be working on the new project full-time, which also includes marketing the business online and on social media.

Councillors questioned him on various aspects of his business and showed a keen interest.

Mr Logue told how he is currently taking one group of 12 a day but hopes to do three tours a day.

“With a street trader’s licence I would be looking at charging around £7 or £8 a day,” he told the committee.

Children would be £4 and under 12s would go free.

Mr Logue said: “I’ve had a few practice tours so far and people from Glasgow have said they’re finding out things they weren’t aware of.

“But, a lot of them are tourists, from Ecuador, Papa New Guinea – the only continent I’ve not had people from is Africa.

“A guy told me that looking down Ingram Street to the Gallery of Modern Art reminded him of the Pantheon of Rome.”

Hanif Rajah said: “Well done, keep it up.”

Alex Wilson, convener of the committee, said: “I commend your entrepreneurial spirit.”
