A POPULAR Finnieston barber devastated by fire has shown a phoenix can rise from the ashes again as it prepares to reopen.

In what has been a tough year for Glasgow - with two major blazes ravaging Sauchiehall Street - the team at Rebel Rebel on Argyle Street will reopen its doors on Friday.

The shop had been open for just nine months when, in September 2017, an electrical fault saw the shop go up in flames.

Thankfully, the chain’s Union Street branch was on hand to make sure clients were not left in the dark and that staff would not be out out of work.

Speaking to the Evening Times, co-owner Colin Bauld said: “We’re nearly there. We just have to get our clients switched over from Union Street to Finnieston.”

The 48-year-old, from Park Circus, said: “I live closeby and know the local community very well. They were always asking when we’d be open again. Well, now we are.”

An entire block of nearby Sauchiehall Street has been closed since March after the iconic Victoria’s nightclub went up in flames, affecting other businesses.

Then, just last week, the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art was dealt a double blow after it went on fire for the second time in just four years with more than a dozen businesses affected.

Co-owner Alan Findlay said: “It’s heartbreaking to see. I really feel for them. Thankfully, we had our other store but, for many of these businesses, this is their livelihood. It’ll be tough with the amount of hoops they’ll will have to jump through with insurance companies.”

In a message to those businesses, the 45-year-old from Dennistoun added: “Stay strong and keep the conversation open with the council and each other.”

In the meantime, both owners said they are looking forward to being open again and offering “the same great service we were offering before.”

Weather-permitting, the staff hope to start a pop-up in Kelvingrove Park where they’ll be offering haircuts to the public to let them know the shop is open again.

Alan recently launched the MADE Academy, close to the Squinty Bridge, which gives others the chance to become involved in the barbering industry where Rebel Rebel provides training and barbering education.
