POLLOKSHIELDS pupils have tackled anti-social behaviour in their community in short films screened in Venice.

Inconsiderate Behaviour, produced by Pollokshields Community Council, was well received at its world premiere in Italy earlier this month.

Now the five short films will receive their first UK screening this weekend.

Take Care, Create, Dance, Shooting Star and Slow Down were written by local parents and carers who worked with local artist and community activist Kate E Deeming.

Kate, who is also a parent and vice chairwoman of Pollokshields Community Council, said: “This was really about starting a conversation about inconsiderate behaviours like littering, setting off fireworks, graffitiing, speeding vehicles and bullying.

"I have to say I experienced a five star response from the local head teachers who allowed pupils to get involved.

“The pupils gave stellar performances and really make you think about engagement, empowerment and ownership of public spaces.

"The films garnered interest in Venice because they concerned the design and use of our outdoor, public spaces.”

The films feature local youngsters attending Pollokshields, St Alberts and Glendale Primary Schools as well as Glendale Gaelic School.

They highlight they inconsiderate behaviour concerns their community has and were created with community film-maker Basharat Khan.

The UK premiere will take place at The Common - formerly Kingston Bowling Club - on Kenmure Street on Sunday, June 24 at 1pm.

It is free to attend and will be presented by Pollokshields Together.

Inconsiderate Behaviour had its world premiere at an event The Happenstance, which is Scotland’s contribution to the Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Councillor David McDonald, chairman of Glasgow Life and Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “I’m intrigued to see the films.

"I believe they ask viewers to reflect on how they tackle the complexities of anti-social behaviour and suggest alternative and possibly more effective ways of addressing these issues.

"My congratulations to everyone involved in this artistic endeavour for their hard work and commitment to positive community engagement.

"Particularly our young people as we celebrate Year of Young People.

"They are a credit to Pollokshields and can make us all feel incredibly positive about its future.”
