A WEST END library could be refurbished if city planners approve plans.

A planning application has been submitted to Glasgow City Council asking for permission to make internal and external alterations to Partick Library on Dumbarton Road.

The application by Glasgow Life was submitted because the premises is a listed C category building and consent is needed before the work can be carried out.

Glasgow Life said they are refurbishing the premises to address a decline in visitor numbers and to ensure Partick Library's future.

The planning statement said: "Glasgow Life has identified a need to make the building more attractive to a wider range of potential customers."

The plans also reveal that the library, which has been operating since 1926, will feature a new mezzanine which will be installed to provide additional book storage and study, and a children's library tailored to young people.

The building was last refurbished in the 1960s and there has been a number of issues including ongoing roof leaks but the plans looks to address these issues.

The planning statement added: "Overall, the proposals guarantee the future of the building, the proposed interventions maximising service provision while preserving the architectural features of the building."

A decision is expected on the plans by August 10.
