A SPRINGBURN mum had her son taken off her for failing to clean their house.

The 22-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was arrested after police investigated the disgusting property – which reeked of urine and faeces.

The home was found in a state of disrepair with missing cupboard doors, uncovered floors and dirty clothes lying around. The officers reported that it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months.

The accused claimed there had been a flood and she was waiting for her dad, the property's owner, to fix the damage. However, police could not find evidence of flooding.

The accused's pet dog, which had been shut into the bathroom during the officers' visit, was found shaking and kept falling down.

After failing to grasp the severity of the conditions, social workers were called and the child was removed from the accused's care.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, the accused pleaded guilty to wilfully exposing her two-year-old son to filthy and dangerous living conditions on July 11, 2016.

In defence it was highlighted that the accused was only 20 at the time of the offence and that "naivety played a part".

It was explained that the now mum-of-three was mostly living with her partner's family and rarely stayed over at the property, but visited twice a day to take care of the dog. The four-year-old pet was blamed for the smell of urine.

Although the woman did not have concerns about the large dog when around family or friends, she did admit that she had trouble controlling the pet around strangers.

A week after she was arrested, the dog was put down. Once the pet was out of the picture, the boy was returned to his mother and there have been no issues since at their new address.

It was noted that there were no concerns over the health of the child as there was plenty of food and clothing within the property, however the accused accepted why she ended up in court.

Sheriff Gerard Bonnar told the accused: "You put yourself in a difficult position."

Due to her lack of criminal record and keeping out of trouble since the incident, she was thereafter admonished.
