INSURANCE firms are offering no help to residents and businesses affected by the Glasgow School of Art fire the Prime Minister has been told.

Theresa May has been asked to step in and help residents and traders who have been moved out after the fire but who can’t claim insurance.

Alison Thewliss, Glasgow Central SNP MP told Theresa May many people are getting no help from their insurance because their property was not damaged in the fire.

She said many businesses and residents are unable to return to their home because it is inside the cordon which remains in place for safety reasons, leaving them out of pocket.

She asked Theresa May during Prime Minister’s Questions to offer help with insurance firms.

Ms May said the Scottish Secretary, David Mundell would look at the issue.

Ms Thewliss said: “This is a very difficult and frustrating time for residents and businesses affected by the fire. People have been displaced from their homes for nearly two weeks with little by way of support from their insurance companies.

“Through no fault of their own, residents are having to pay for alternative accommodation and have no access to their belongings. Some have even indicated that it would have been easier if their homes had been damaged because then they would have a clear entitlement to payment.

“It’s time for insurance companies to step up and provide the support that my constituents deserve.”
