THE chance to wear the captain’s armband was always an honour for me at Rangers and I am sure being made skipper will be a real boost to James Tavernier this season.

He is someone the fans like but he is also a leader and he has the right mentality to lead from the front. I think it is a good call from Steven to make him skipper.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you see an extra 10 per cent from him this year and he will be an integral part of the team, and the club.

When a guy like Steven Gerrard turns round and makes you captain, that is some backing and some accolade to have in your career.

There is pressure that comes with that armband but I am sure that Tav will be able to handle that no problem.

The captain is the one that all the players look up to and he is one of the longest-serving members of that squad now.

He knows the demands of Rangers, he knows the club and he seems happy in Glasgow so, for me, he is a good choice to be skipper.

He will need to help the players that come in and he will take the brunt of anything negative that happens on the pitch. But that comes with the job and I am sure Tav will relish that.
